"May you live in interesting times”
Is an English expression based on the translation of a Chinese curse. The expression is used ironically and usually signals times of trouble, or danger, or both. From a timeline perspective 2020 has been eventful. Starting in January the news cycle was led by the devastating wildfires in Australia. Many hypothesized the fires were brought on by climate change. Shortly thereafter news of a mysterious virus shifted our collective focus. By mid-March, citizens across the globe were urged to minimize social interaction. As of today, many of have been working from home and sheltering in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Anchored at home, many saw or became aware of the recent senseless deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Even during a global pandemic we are reminded that the greatest danger we pose is to ourselves. And unfortunately sometimes danger comes from those entrusted to keep us safe.
It's worth noting that during these challenging times Florida International University (FIU), University of Central Florida (UCF), and University of South Florida (USF) represents over 180,000 students in the fastest growing regions in Florida. These students are the future of the Sunshine State. To date, President Rosenberg, President Cartwright, and President Currall have reached out to their campus communities. Each institution hosted forums where students and employees could communicate their observations and frustrations. They have also connected students and employees to mental and emotional support resources. Our partners at Helios Education Foundation led by their board chair Vince Roig and President and CEO Paul J. Luna also conveyed their position, vision for a brighter future, and equity for students in the regions they support.
Why is this important? It is dark right now, however, even in darkness, light finds a way. Not convinced? Each night millions of lightning bugs dance. As the evening continues they eventually sync-up in a pulsating wave. Experts do not have an explanation for this phenomenon, it just happens. This same wave of light can be seen across the globe and at FIU, UCF, and USF. In many cases, the wave is being led by courageous leaders, long standing partners, most important students who refuse to be silenced. Like minds are pooling resources and working together in solidarity. The future is ours to create. May it be equitable, and more just.
