The Florida Consortium hosts several worthwhile workshops, trainings, knowledge sharing events and conferences throughout the year. Our Florida Metropolitan STEM Continuum: From College to Career program has been instrumental in helping to further connect faculty and administrators from Florida International University, University of Central Florida and University of South Florida to community leaders and employers in Florida. While we’re at the tail end of this program, we want to keep the conversations going across our campuses and in the community. The taste of science is one creative way we plan to do just that.
The taste of science is an annual festival that occurs in cities across the United States. The festival is powered by over 150 volunteers. This year, the taste of science festivals will take place April 21-27, 2019. Speakers are typically scientists, researchers, developers, tech professionals and educators. The Florida Consortium is helping to launch taste of science Orlando and introduce student researchers to this annual event. We plan to leverage all the learnings from our colleagues leading the taste of science Tampa.
The inaugural taste of science will take place April 22-23 in Orlando. The festival will consist of short TED talk- style presentations on science or technology related topics in a local establishments. We wholeheartedly believe that events like the taste of science Orlando can help to address the widening gulf between what educators and researchers do and public perception. For seasoned pros, the taste of science, is a great opportunity to share cutting edge research. For students and early career researchers, the festival is an opportunity to network with professionals in the area, and to practice public speaking. We’ve enlisted UCF’s LEAD Scholars to launch the taste of science Orlando to the UCF student community. Dr. Lynell Hodge and her students have compiled a list of over 50 active student groups and are actively recruiting student presenters for the inaugural event in Orlando. We’re also working with Kimberly Schneider, director of the office of Undergraduate Research to drum up student participation.
Here’s my pitch to you; save the date and make plans to join us on April 22-23, 2019.
Equally important, sign up to give a talk during taste of science Orlando .
We’ll be announcing locations soon. Also if you were wondering, the festival name always appears in lowercase letters.
